It is a common belief in Thailand that if you release birds and turtles into the wild, you gain merit for being compassionate. The story originates from the time of Lord Buddha where a young man was facing an imminent death in seven days as foretold by a monk. But through the merits that the man had performed over the seven days which include helping birds to free from captivity before his death, his life was spared and he escaped death.

Today it is common to find vendors selling birds in cage along the street of Hatyai to Buddhist worshipers and tourists to be released as an act of merit.
